Ho, Moreno Win Inaugural Vintners 5 Miler at Sanford Winery

Unique, non-traditional race with one-of-a-kind post-race Finish Line Festival with wine tasting, live music, BBQ lunch by the Hitching Post draws more than 300 runners, friends and family; Santa Barbara Vintners Foundation fundraiser for its community programs

LOMPOC, Calif. – (July 25, 2015) – On a picture perfect Saturday morning, Ricky Ho of Carpinteria and Dani Moreno of Santa Barbara won the inaugural Vintners 5 Miler presented by the Santa Barbara Vintners Foundation. On this unique trail run with mixed terrain and spectacular views overlooking the Sanford Winery and Vineyards on Santa Rosa Road, Ho, 39, bested the field, clocking 30 minutes, 8 seconds, while recent UCSB grad Moreno, 23, crossed the finish line in 31:48 as top woman, finishing 5th overall.

“What a terrific first-year event! We had a beautiful day for a run and then a one-of-a-kind post-race festival for all including the participants, families and friends as well as kids,” said Sanford winemaker and Vintners Board member Steve Fennell who also placed 11th overall. “A big thank you to everybody who made this event so special. The Vintners 5 Miler also served as a fundraiser for the Vintners Foundation’s community programs, and we are already planning next year’s event.”

Overall, there were nearly 250 entrants and 201 official finishers. The team competition with eight scoring teams (three finishing runners) was won by RMTC in 1:33:22 (Johnny Jimenez, 30:39; Greshon Smith, 30:57 and Brian Illes, 31:46, who overall finished 2-4).

Each mile on the course celebrated one of the five Santa Barbara County American Viticultural Areas (AVA): Ballard Canyon, Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara, Santa Maria Valley, Sta. Rita Hills and Santa Ynez Valley.

The post-race Finish Line Festival was a family-friendly event that included complimentary wine tasting, music by Dave Courtenay & The Castawaves, a kids fun zone and a Santa Ynez-style BBQ lunch by the world famous Hitching Post II.

Participating wineries at the event included: Sanford Winery, Casa Dumetz, Hitching Post Wines, Beckmen Vineyards, FOXEN, Summerland Winery, Crawford Family, Costo de Oro, Grassini Family Vineyards and Dierberg / Star Lane.
